Why 'learn it yourself' is terribly misguided advice
New music makers are often told by peers to just sit down and play around with the software to learn it.
“There’s no need to waste money on tuition or courses, just figure it out for yourself and use YouTube!”
The well-intentioned people giving this advice seem to forget 2 important points:
- They were likely helped by somebody more experienced when they were learning, usually by watching someone else make music and being able to ask questions in real time.
- OR, if they did figure this out on their own, it took a seriously long time, it was frustrating, they often got overwhelmed, and they’ve likely developed bad habits due to not having a solid foundation of the basics.
And it doesn’t stop there…
The same people will then likely tell you that this plugin, or this sample pack, or this synth or this DAW will get you the results you’re looking for.
Just spend this money on this tool and you’ll soon be making music like this producer.
So you end up with a desk full of equipment that you don’t know how to use properly, and plugins that you just don’t understand! Oh yeah, and the receipt showing you the damage that this caused to your bank balance.
It’s no wonder that aspiring dance music makers get so frustrated and overwhelmed.
There is a better way...
However, there is a solution. Over the past 4 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping a lot of new dance music makers take their first steps towards the results that they really want.
After being lucky enough to rack up millions of YouTube tutorial views, and to also have a day job making this content for a reputable company, I wanted to share a more structured plan for anyone to achieve these results.
'Ableton Accelerator' is a beginner-focussed online video course which reduces the overwhelm and frustration of learning electronic music production.

Access to me for questions
Videos are great, but sometimes you just need to ask questions. You'll get a swift response from me in the comments.
Module 1 - Introduction and setup
Welcome! Let’s get everything set up, connected and download the exclusive sample pack that comes bundled with this course so that you can work along with everything that’s shown in the videos.
Module 2 - Quick Wins
Before you take the first steps of the Ableton Accelerator course, I want to give you a quick hit of motivation and inspiration to help you hit the ground running.
This super-short section addresses two of the biggest fears I hear around learning music production: a lack of technical experience with the software, and a lack of music theory knowledge.
Module 3 - Technical Fundamentals
If you were building houses, you’d want to know as much as possible about the materials and the tools you’ll be using to do the job. I want to give you a foundation of knowledge that will stay with you for your whole music making career. You’ll learn how to navigate Ableton Live, and you’ll understand how and why we use audio, MIDI and samplers to make dance music.
Module 4 - Learn the sounds
After this module, you’ll be able to listen to tracks you love and pick out a pad, a stab, a lead, a bassline, an atmosphere, a call-and-response and more. You’ll also understand the effect that each of them has in a track.
Module 5 - Getting Ideas Down
Whether it's a drum beat, a bass line, a vocal or a melody, you need to know how to get your ideas down into Ableton Live. This is the biggest section of the course for good reason: getting great ideas down is key to making the great tracks you’re capable of making!
Module 6 - Building Your Track
Now that you've generated a bunch of ideas, it's time to get them down into a full track. You want to be able to grab and hold the listeners interest. You want to be able to create tension and impact with your music. You want to make the people on the dancefloor move. In this section, you’ll learn how to do that.
Module 7 - Learn the Tools
We’ll look at how you can use the big 5 plugins to make your tracks sound professional. If you’ve been intimidated by EQ, compression or any other audio effect, then in this section I’ll give you clear explanations of what these tools are for, and show you examples of how I use them. I’ll talk to you about why I think you should avoid third-party plugins at this stage and stick to what Ableton provides (stock plugins).
Module 8 - Mixing and Mastering
Now that you’re familiar with the tools, let’s use them to make your track sound as professional as possible so that it holds its own in club settings and bedrooms alike. A bad track can’t be made into a good track with the mixing or mastering, that’s why this comes after we’ve made an engaging, high quality track.
Module 9 - Building your music making system
So you’ve put an evening aside to ‘work on music’. You sit down after dinner, open Ableton and gaze at an 8 bar loop or a blank screen. Sound familiar? You need a music-making system. I’m going to share my secret for never being in this position, and it’s super simple.
Module 10 - Next Steps
You will get stuck, you will get bored and you will get frustrated. That’s unavoidable. However, you’ve come too far and invested too much time to give up. So, I’m sharing a process that I’ve used for years to get myself out of a rut.
What should you learn next? Advanced mixing and mastering? Sound design? Music theory? You need answers to this question, as well as a list of high quality resources to move on to after this course.
